SLIDESHOW: Eerie scenes in Zamboanga City following clash between gov't, MNLF
At least 6 people were killed and 24 others were wounded following skirmishes between government troops and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels.
Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco said the fatalities include one policeman, one navy personnel and four civilians.
Climaco said over a thousand people have fled their homes since violence erupted last night.
At least 300 residents were forced to flee their homes at around 11 p.m. Sunday after MNLF forces clashed with government troops in Barangays Mariki and Rio Hondo.
Some 600 evacuees from Arena Blanco and Rio Hondo are now taking shelter at a grandstand and 847 more at the Tetuan Central School, Tetuan Parish Church and Talon-Talon National High School.
Meantime, Malaysia police ordered a security alert in its borders following the attacks in Zamboanga City allegedly led by factions from the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), according to a report by Malaysia’s The Star.
